SBG is the Surface Biology and Geology designated observable identified in the recently released NRC 2017 Decadal Survey (DS) : "Thriving on Our Changing Planet: A Decadal Strategy for Earth Observation from Space."]  SBG has candidate measurement approaches that are similar to the HyspIRI mission concept that we have been developing over the past decade.

The location of the workshop will be the Carnegie Institution for Science, Auditorium, 1530 P Street NW Washington, DC  20005.

Information on the workshop can be found at [https://hyspiri.jpl.nasa.gov/events/2018-hyspiri-science-and-applications-workshop].

The first day of the Workshop will review the results of the HyspIRI mission concept and our Comprehensive Report, developed in response to guidance from the 2007 DS.

Potential HyspIRI-related topics for day 1:

- Science and applications questions, objectives, and requirements

- Science and Applications Traceability Matrices

- VSWIR and TIR observation approaches and technology readiness

- Onboard processing of the real-time data (Intelligent Payload Module)

- Calibration and validation

- Data processing algorithm maturity and theoretical basis

- Airborne campaigns and science results

The second and third days of the workshop will be used for community inputs and discussion related to the Surface Biology and Geology targeted observable identified by the 2017 DS.  The SBG Science/Applications Summary of Earth surface measurements (Table S.2) includes geology, biology, ground/water temperature, snow reflectivity, active geologic processes, vegetation traits, and algal biomass. The SBG Candidate Measurement Approach: Hyperspectral imagery in the visible and shortwave infrared, multi- or hyperspectral imagery in the thermal IR.  An excerpt on SBG from the Decadal Survey is reproduced below.

Potential topics for days 2 and 3:

- Review and discuss the SBG Science and Applications questions and related objectives called for in the 2017 Decadal Survey

- Discuss importance of the cost limits and approaches for success

- Explore and refine the SBG science and applications traceability matrices

- Review and discuss possible VSWIR and TIR spectral, spatial, radiometric, and temporal observations options and onboard processing/downlink to address goals and objectives

- Discuss algorithm and product maturity as well as validation and calibration options

- Explore international and other partnership options and related/synergistic missions

- Review technology options and precursor airborne campaigns opportunities tied to SBG science and applications

- Explore application opportunities within the SBG scope
