NASA DEVELOP Project - Costa Rica Agriculture II Fall 2016
Objective: Analyzing Advantages of ECOSTRESS Data as a Tool for Drought Detection and Water Management Practices
Team: *David Comer, Sol Kim, Katherine Cavanaugh, Ian Heming (*indicates Team Lead)
Mentors: Dr. Christine Lee, Dr. Joshua Fisher
Partners at EARTH University: Dr. Johan Perret, Jose Eduardo Villalobos Leandro, Karim Abdalla Bolanos, Carol Lucia Fuentes Fallas
Community Concern:
- Prolonged drought in Central America is causing water stress and crop loss in agricultural areas that are vital to the economic productivity and livelihood of residents
- 3.5 million people in Central America are food insecure, and that number will only increase as crop production decreases
- Crop failure is contributing to rising unemployment levels, and as a result, Central American migration rates are increasing
